The GOOD Party welcomes and applauds the leadership of Theewaterskloof Municipality for its proactive commitment to transparency and community inclusion through its Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC). The Speaker of Council, GOOD Councillor Weldon Wells, has reaffirmed that MPAC meetings will be open to the public, and that notices of these important oversight sessions will be actively communicated to all residents.  This is a commendable step in strengthening accountability and building trust between the municipality and the people it serves. In a political climate where far too many municipalities shield executive actions from public scrutiny, Theewaterskloof is setting the right example.

The GOOD Party is devastated by the spate of gang-related shootings in Mitchell’s Plain, which left five people dead and seven more injured across multiple locations. Our hearts go out to the families mourning loved ones, and to the communities once again living in fear. This is not the first tragedy of its kind, and heartbreakingly, it will not be the last, unless our government at all levels finds the courage to face the truth that this is not just a policing crisis, this is a planning, poverty, and inequality crisis.

If President Cyril Ramaphosa is serious about prosecuting apartheid era operatives accused of heinous crimes, instead of waiting for a judicial commission to investigate the reasons for decades-long delays, he must demand urgent accountability from his Ministers of Justice and Defence for their dithering departments.

Because, while it is usually accused persons who adopt so-called Stalingrad strategies to delay the administration of justice, for nearly 25 years the State has used every power and trick at its disposal to delay and/or avoid acting against murderers who were denied amnesty (or chose not to apply) through the TRC process established for the purpose.

Gun violence continues to plague the Western Cape, and the City of Cape Town remains disturbingly unprepared, and seemingly unwilling, to confront the root causes of the crisis. In June, seven people were gunned down in a mass shooting at a home in the Kanana Informal Settlement, Gugulethu. In a separate incident in White City, Nyanga, two men were murdered in cold blood. Just days earlier, the bodies of three men were discovered in Samora Machel. These are not isolated incidents, they are symptoms of a deepening urban crisis rooted in inequality, spatial injustice, and the persistent failure of leadership.

The GOOD Party welcomes the long-overdue arrests of former Transnet executives Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama, who handed themselves over to police and are expected to appear in court later today.

According to media reports, the arrests relate to a dubious R93-million double payment linked to the procurement of 1,064 locomotives during Molefe’s tenure as Group CEO of Transnet between 2011 and 2015. This case is yet another example of the industrial-scale looting that took place under the cover of State Capture, a project that robbed South Africans of infrastructure, integrity, and justice.

One in five households in South Africa experiences inadequate or severely inadequate access to food. Thirty percent of boys under five are stunted due to chronic undernutrition, while millions of South Africans are forced to make impossible trade-offs between affordability and nutrition. This is not a food production problem, it is a poverty problem.

TRAIN COLLISION AT PHILIPPI RAIL CROSSING: COMMUTERS PAY THE PRICE FOR INACTION

This morning, the 07:35 PRASA train from Nonqubela to Cape Town collided with a car at the Philippi rail crossing. It is not clear from the footage received by GOOD if there were any injuries. Passengers were forced to disembark and find their way into the city via taxis, at their own cost and risk. This incident again highlights the urgent need to prioritise safe and functional rail infrastructure. Rail crossings, especially in high-traffic, densely populated areas,  must be upgraded immediately. There is no justification for continued inaction while lives are endangered.
