CAPE TOWN’S UNEQUAL SAFETY CRISIS: RED CARPET FOR VISITORS, BODY BAGS FOR COMMUNITIES

Families on the Cape Flats deserve the same security, dignity, and protection afforded to tourists and those in the City’s wealthier neighbourhoods. Until government invests in the people who live here every day of the year, not only those who visit briefly, Cape Town cannot claim to be a world-class city. The GOOD Party wants every tourist to enjoy a safe holiday in Cape Town. Tourism is vital to our economy; it creates jobs and supports local businesses. But a truly safe tourism season requires more than another branded enforcement unit and photo-op. It demands investment in the physical and socio-economic living conditions of the people who call this city home, especially those pushed to its margins by geography and inequality.

GOOD’S BRETT HERRON LAYS FRAUD COMPLAINT AGAINST WESTERN CAPE MECS

GOOD Secretary-General and Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, Brett Herron, has lodged a criminal complaint against former Finance MEC Mireille Wenger (now Health MEC) and Education MEC David Maynier, alleging they knowingly tabled a false provincial budget ahead of the 2024 elections.

DA HYPOCRISY ON POLICING EXPOSED: LEAP HAS COST BILLIONS AND FAILED TO DELIVER

It is disingenuous and pure political point-scoring for the Democratic Alliance to jump on the crime-warden bandwagon in Gauteng. The DA’s own Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) in the Western Cape has cost taxpayers more than R4 billion and failed to show tangible results in reducing crime. Yet, the DA now seeks to claim the moral high ground in Gauteng while ignoring the failure of its own policing vanity project. Both Gauteng’s Crime Prevention Wardens (CPW/Amapanyaza) and the Western Cape’s LEAP officers exist in the same legal grey zone. Neither province has the authority to establish parallel policing structures. GOOD has been consistent that these unregulated, politically driven initiatives are illegal, ineffective, and unsustainable.

CANCELLING WESTERN CAPE PARLIAMENT FOR THE PREMIER’S INVESTMENT SUMMIT IS AN INSULT TO DEMOCRACY

Cancelling a sitting of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament to accommodate an investment summit, one that clearly interests only the executive, is an insult to democracy in this province and places the independence of the legislature at stake. Not every Member of Parliament needs to attend the Premier’s pet project. When the Premier starts dictating when Parliament can or cannot sit, we edge dangerously close to a constitutional crisis. If the Premier can rewrite the legislative calendar whenever it suits him, then the very purpose of having a legislature is stripped away.

THEEWATERSKLOOF: THE DA GOES DOWN ON BENDED KNEE TO THE EFF

The DA is seeking to woo the EFF in the Theewaterskloof Municipality to support the unlawful summary dismissal of a senior manager without implementing regulated disciplinary processes.
On offer as an inducement to the EFF’s sole councillor in Theewaterskloof is a senior position as an MMC or chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee, in return for voting in favour of the dismissal.

ANTI-BBBEE BILL: ANOTHER PIECE IN DA STRATEGY TO USE ANC WEAKNESSES TO SUBVERT PRINCIPLES OF TRANSFORMATION

The fact that the ANC has grossly manipulated Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment policies to favour a small circle of its friends is disgraceful and wasteful, but that does not mean the national imperative to transform ownership of the economy should be abandoned. There have been some positive BBBEE initiatives, such as the transfer of company shares to employees, but these successes have been overwhelmed by a tide of state ineptitude and corruption.

PHILIPPI MASS SHOOTING CONFIRMS THE CAPE FLATS REMAIN UNDER SIEGE – SPATIAL AND SOCIAL REDRESS IS URGENT

The GOOD Party extends heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones and to the communities living under constant siege of violence. Reports of yet another mass shooting in Philippi on Friday night, claiming seven lives, confirm that many communities on the Cape Flats are living in what can only be described as a war zone. Violent crime and gang warfare continue to claim lives indiscriminately, leaving families traumatised and neighbourhoods terrorised.

TSHWANE MULTI-PARTY COALITION: YEAR OF EXCEPTIONAL GROWTH AND GOOD GOVERNANCE

The GOOD Party congratulates the multi-party coalition government of the City of Tshwane on the tremendous achievements recorded during the past 12 months since being elected to office by the Tshwane Council in October 2024.
A 4.5% reduction in unemployment, confirmed by Stats SA, shows that the Capital City is indeed rising, fast. More jobs were created in Tshwane over the past year than the combined job gains of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Ekurhuleni and eThekwini, demonstrating the phenomenal success of the coalition’s economic strategy.

CEASEFIRE IN GAZA: TOO SOON FOR UNBRIDLED CELEBRATIONS

The GOOD Party welcomes reports of an imminent ceasefire in the Holy Land. It will bring immediate relief to both Palestinians and Israelis: The genocide in Gaza will be placed on pause, Hamas will release the Israeli hostages it still holds, and Israel will release Palestinian political prisoners. These are critical steps to stopping the bloodshed and destruction, but until we know what the future holds for Gazans, we can’t know if the peace will be sustainable – and it is therefore too soon for unbridled celebrations. The homes of more than 90% of Gazans have been destroyed along with the vast bulk of the territory’s infrastructure.
