STATE CAPTURE: TIME FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

The GOOD Party welcomes the long-overdue arrests of former Transnet executives Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama, who handed themselves over to police and are expected to appear in court later today.

According to media reports, the arrests relate to a dubious R93-million double payment linked to the procurement of 1,064 locomotives during Molefe’s tenure as Group CEO of Transnet between 2011 and 2015. This case is yet another example of the industrial-scale looting that took place under the cover of State Capture, a project that robbed South Africans of infrastructure, integrity, and justice.

SWELLENDAM MUNICIPALITY: GOOD WELCOMES NEWS OF HAWKS INVESTIGATION INTO TENDER FRAUD ALLEGATIONS

The GOOD Party welcomes reports that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) are now probing the serious allegations contained in the preliminary Vermaak Report into procurement irregularities in the Swellendam Municipality. This development is a significant moment for accountability and justice in a municipality that has long been mired in allegations of fraud, misconduct, and political interference.

SERI REPORT REINFORCES URGENT NEED FOR BASIC INCOME GRANT

The latest Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) “Food for Thought” report exposes a nation in crisis. One in five households in South Africa experiences inadequate or severely inadequate access to food. Thirty percent of boys under five are stunted due to chronic undernutrition, while millions of South Africans are forced to make impossible trade-offs between affordability and nutrition. This is not a food production problem, it is a poverty problem.

TRAIN COLLISION AT PHILIPPI RAIL CROSSING: COMMUTERS PAY THE PRICE FOR INACTION

This morning, the 07:35 PRASA train from Nonqubela to Cape Town collided with a car at the Philippi rail crossing. It is not clear from the footage received by GOOD if there were any injuries. Passengers were forced to disembark and find their way into the city via taxis, at their own cost and risk. This incident again highlights the urgent need to prioritise safe and functional rail infrastructure. Rail crossings, especially in high-traffic, densely populated areas,  must be upgraded immediately. There is no justification for continued inaction while lives are endangered.

WESTERN CAPE HOUSING QUEUE: WAITING FOR A GRAVE, NOT A HOME

The Western Cape’s housing backlog now sits at a staggering 688,824 households and is growing. Yet, the answers received from Infrastructure MEC Tertuis Simmers expose a system so dysfunctional that it might as well not exist. When asked how long the top ten applicants in each municipality have been waiting, the answers are devastating; many have waited more than 30 years. One individual has been on the list for over 62 years.

ONE YEAR INTO THE GNU: TIME TO DELIVER ON THE PROMISE

Today marks one year since the Government of National Unity was formed, a bold and necessary step towards restoring stability and collaboration in a fractured political landscape. For the first time, the official opposition, most notably the DA, has found itself not across the aisle, but at the table. This has placed them in uncharted waters, balancing critique with cooperation. It is a tightrope that GOOD has walked before. When our leader, Patricia de Lille, entered Cabinet in 2019.

YOUTH DAY: THE FIGHT FOR LANGUAGE JUSTICE CONTINUES

On this Youth Day, we remember the fearless students of 1976 who took to the streets of Soweto to demand dignity in education. Their protest was not simply about textbooks or classrooms, it was a protest for voice, identity, and the right to learn in a language that empowered them, not one imposed upon them by a regime of oppression.

WESTERN CAPE BUDGET 2.0: STILL MISSING THE MARK

The 2025 Western Cape Budget 2.0, which had the opportunity to shift away from its original form, and actually prioritise the long-term needs of our people, but has instead continued to favour short-term optics.

Despite allocating R101 billion to education over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), our schools are struggling under the weight of increasing enrolment, overcrowded classrooms, and a shortage of teachers. The additional R549 million allocated for learner growth over the next three years is simply inadequate. True investment in the future demands proper infrastructure, well-paid teachers, and expanded educational support, all of which are insufficiently addressed in this budget.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PLAY: A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE

Today, on International Day of Play, the GOOD Party stands in defence of every child’s right to play – safely, freely, and with dignity. Play is not a privilege. It is a right, enshrined in Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which South Africa has ratified. Article 31 explicitly states: “States Parties recognise the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child… and shall encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activity.”
