Statement by Brett Herron, Secretary General for GOOD and Member of the
Western Cape Provincial Parliament
GOOD support’s Premier Winde’s commitment to unblock Tafelberg for
25th July 2019
In Premier Alan Winde’s reply to the Western Cape State of the Province debate address this afternoon, I was very pleased to hear him express his support to commit to unblock the Tafelberg site and use this well-located site for affordable housing.
The Premier committed that, “where the province is involved … we will commit to unlocking wherever we can the blockages to using land for affordable housing”, including the Tafelberg site.
Tafelberg was previously sold by the Province to a private school and is earmarked for development. Before that cabinet decision the old school site, in Cape Towns prestigious Atlantic seaboard, had been identified for affordable housing.
The decision to sell the Tafelberg School site is currently subject to two Western Cape High Court review applications, including one brought by Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu.
I look forward to Premier Winde reversing this decision. This is a far better example of spatial justice than the Forest Village project, located more than 30kms from the CBD, that he lauded earlier in the week.
