CEASEFIRE IN GAZA: TOO SOON FOR UNBRIDLED CELEBRATIONS

GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General

10 October 2025

The GOOD Party welcomes reports of an imminent ceasefire in the Holy Land. It will bring immediate relief to both Palestinians and Israelis: The genocide in Gaza will be placed on pause, Hamas will release the Israeli hostages it still holds, and Israel will release Palestinian political prisoners.

These are critical steps to stopping the bloodshed and destruction, but until we know what the future holds for Gazans, we can’t know if the peace will be sustainable – and it is therefore too soon for unbridled celebrations. The homes of more than 90% of Gazans have been destroyed along with the vast bulk of the territory’s infrastructure.

A ceasefire is not an end in itself; it creates an opportunity to lay the foundation for a fair political process that restores rights, rebuilds trust on both sides of the fence, and delivers safety and dignity to all.

It also creates the opportunity to plot how to begin giving practical expression to nations’ overwhelming recognition of a state of Palestine at the United Nations a few weeks ago.

We pray that the ceasefire holds, and call on the international community to direct immediate and sustained humanitarian support to Gaza.
